Renewal of an alerting solution via a prioritized UMTS network

A municipality faced the problem that its water level alert system for reservoirs and pumping stations was nearing its end. This was due to the network operator’s termination of the service (CSD service on the GSM network at the end of 2017). From a budgetary perspective, a solution was needed that reused as many components as possible. This was achieved using an Ethernet converter combined with a prioritized UMTS network. The consolidation of reports from 20 stations took place at the central control unit, which also involved upgrading the old computer hardware while retaining the existing visualization. Status and trends can be accessed via smartphone or tablet.

Objectives:

  • New, reliable connection of the 20 stations to the central control room and replacement of the discontinued GSM CSD service
  • Cost-effective through reuse of existing components (such as Siemens S5/S7-200 and HMI visualization in the central control room)
  • Rapid implementation

Implemented solution:

  • Use of a secure UMTS solution (M2M architecture)
  • Alarm messages are consolidated and sent based on duty rosters
  • Configurable escalation levels (wastewater treatment plant operators, shift supervisors, VIPs)

Key results:

  • Cost-efficient through the use of existing components
  • More convenient and reliable alarm solution
  • Online reports (ÖVGW W85)
